When you use E-Mail, you need to send and receive. To receive you normally use a POP- or IMAP-Server. To send you need an SMTP-Server (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) which will pick up your mail and send it to the desired server.
In phpBB there are some functions that will send mail to users automatically (if you receive a new PM, for example). So in the configuration-part of the admin panel, it asks you for a SMPT-Server (and username and password for it). You need to use this if the php "mail" command is disabled on your server. Since this is not the case on our server, we must not enter anything there, so phpBB uses the mail-functionality. For some reason, a username and password, but no SMTP-Server was given in our config. After Bull deleted that, phpBB used "mail" again and everything works again.
So the bottom line is: Either enter a valid SMTP-Server with correct username and password or leave it all blank if your php has "mail" activated. |
